Pennsylvania Marriage and Divorce Statistics

The Pennsylvania Department of Health issued their report on Marriage and Divorce Statistics for 2018. The report sets forth various statistics relating to divorce in the Commonwealth including marriages and divorces/annulments statewide, by county, and by duration of marriage.

In 2018, there were 70,954 new marriages and 33,412 divorces and annulments. These figures are similar to recent years. In 2016, there were 73,876 marriages and 33,749 divorces and annulments, and in 2017 there were 73,304 marriages and 32,777 divorces and annulments.

Of the 70,954 new marriages, 20,947 of them took place in the Greater Philadelphia Area (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties). Of the 33,412 divorces or annulments, 6,516 of them took place in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Philadelphia County had the greatest number of divorces in the area at 1,654, and Delaware County had the least at 898.

The report provides statistics for marriages ending in under 5 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years, 15-19 years, 20-24 years, 25-29 years, and more than 30 years. 21.9% of the divorces finalized in 2018 ended marriages lasting under 5 years. 24.4% lasted 5-9 years. 17.3% lasted 10-14 years. 13.2% lasted 15-19 years. 9.4% ended after 20-24 years. 6.6% ended after 25-29 years. 7.3% lasted more than 30 years.
